KUCHING, Aug 18: A 35-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court today for assaulting his girlfriend and destroying her identity card during an argument sparked by allegations of infidelity.
Griffin Nangkai Marshall Ayong, who appeared without legal representation, pleaded guilty to two charges before Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu.
The court imposed 10 months’ imprisonment for voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code. The sentence was ordered to run consecutively with the drug-related sentence Griffin is currently serving.
For the second offence, involving the unauthorised destruction of the victim’s identity card under Regulation 25(1)(d) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, read with Regulation 25(1) of the same regulations, Griffin was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
However, the court ordered that sentence to run concurrently with the sentence for the first offence.
The offences occurred at about 8pm on April 13, 2026, at a house in Lorong 9, Jalan Kuap, Padawan.
According to the case facts, the couple became embroiled in a dispute after Griffin accused his 29-year-old girlfriend of having an affair with another man.
During the heated argument, Griffin turned violent and kicked the woman on the right side of her face, causing injuries to her cheek and upper lip.
He then damaged her identity card by snapping it in two. The victim later reported the incident to police, resulting in Griffin’s arrest.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani appeared for the prosecution. — DayakDaily
