KUCHING, Sept 4: A pair of debt collectors have been sent to prison for a combined 34 months each after admitting they resorted to violence and vandalism while chasing down loan repayments, in incidents that left two households damaged and their occupants shaken.
Samson Ng Jiann Haur, 36, and Marco Tiong King Ling, 32, stood before Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu and pleaded guilty to two separate charges stemming from attacks on borrowers’ homes.
In the more serious case, the men were jointly charged under Section 29B(1) of the Moneylenders Act 1951, along with Section 34 of the Penal Code, and each received 18 months behind bars.
Court documents describe how the pair turned up at a house in Taman Hui Sing just after midnight on August 29, 2026, forced their way onto the property, and took an iron baseball bat to every window in sight.
Their target was a 25-year-old man who still owed RM6,800, despite having borrowed only RM2,000 originally, receiving only RM1,200, and already repaying RM4,800 toward the debt.
Fearing further violence against himself and his family, the victim went to police, setting off an investigation that traced the attack back to the two men, who prosecutors say had been enlisted by a moneylender to frighten the borrower into paying up.
A separate incident brought the men an additional 16-month sentence, this time under Section 427 of the Penal Code read with Section 34, for mischief.
This attack unfolded at a home in Taman Seng Goon Garden on the same night, at around 10.15pm, targeting a 22-year-old borrower. The victim told police he had heard suspicious sounds outside and, upon reviewing his CCTV footage, spotted a group of men in a vehicle flinging pink paint across the front of his house.
His police report eventually led investigators to Ng and Tiong. The paint, thrown aggressively during the debt-collection attempt, also splattered two cars parked outside, causing roughly RM200 in damage.
Ng faced a further reckoning in a separate matter, drawing 10 months’ jail plus a RM6,300 fine or 19 months in default after admitting to three counts of drug consumption under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The pleas were entered before Magistrates Leona, Ling Hui Chuan and Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
The charges centred on his use of amphetamine and methamphetamine on three distinct occasions: 3.15am on August 7, 2012; roughly 3.15pm on March 29, 2023; and 2.05am on May 9, 2026. Two of these episodes took place inside the Padawan District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division office, with the third occurring at its Kota Samarahan counterpart.
Deputy Public Prosecutors Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani and Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, alongside Prosecuting Officer Inspector Siti Radhiah Abdul Rahman, handled the prosecution across the various charges. Neither Ng nor Tiong had legal representation. — DayakDaily
