KUCHING, Sept 7: Sarawak’s tourism players are being urged to treat the ASEAN Tourism Standard (ATS) as a tool to improve the quality of their products and services, rather than merely as a certification to showcase.
In a TVS news report, Deputy Secretary-General (Management) of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Datuk Surrendren Sathasivam said participation in ATS provides industry players with an avenue to assess their existing performance, identify areas for improvement and enhance the quality of tourism products, facilities and services offered to visitors.
“I hope more tourism industry players in Sarawak will come forward to participate in the ASEAN Tourism Standard (ATS) in the future.
“Participation in ATS is not solely aimed at obtaining recognition, but more importantly, it serves as a platform for industry players to assess, improve and enhance the quality of tourism products, facilities and services offered to visitors,” he said during a press conference after attending the ASEAN Tourism Standard Certificate Presentation Ceremony 2026–2028 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
For the 2026–2028 period, three recipients from Sarawak received ATS recognition in their respective categories.
Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) received the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard recognition while Raia Hotel & Convention Centre Kuching was recognised under the ASEAN MICE Standard Event Venue category.
Meanwhile, BCCK received recognition under the ASEAN MICE Standard Exhibition Venue category.
Surrendren said the achievements demonstrated that tourism industry players and related agencies in Sarawak were capable of meeting tourism standards recognised at the ASEAN level.
He described the achievement as a source of pride and expressed hope that more industry players would participate in ATS to further strengthen the competitiveness and quality of Sarawak’s tourism sector. — DayakDaily
