KUCHING, July 8: The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak is appealing to the public to report any incidents of indiscriminate disposal of face masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) waste to its office.

NREB said the public can contact its hotline via WhatsApp or by calling 013-759 5866.

The board in a statement today said the proper disposal of face mask and PPE waste was essential for the benefit of everyone and the environment, adding that indiscriminate disposal could lead to an environmental disaster that may last longer than the Covid-19 pandemic.

It noted that the emergence of Covid-19 has created the compulsory use of face masks in public places such as public transport, shops, offices or other premises.

At the same time, the face mask has become a new category of waste and has seen a significant volume of disposal.

“The government is doing its best in tackling the issue of PPE waste.

“The NREB is intensifying its enforcement and monitoring works. Monitoring and patrolling assisted by drones has increased the efficiency and effectiveness of the enforcement team to detect unscrupulous activities such as indiscriminate disposal of wastes that adversely affect the environment.

“Those found guilty may be subject to the maximum penalty of RM50,000 or imprisonment up to 3 years or both,” NREB said.

The board added all local councils in Sarawak and their waste collection companies are doing their part to provide the best disposal and safe treatment for this waste.

However, it pointed out that the indiscriminate disposal of PPE waste is beyond NREB and local councils’ control but requires the cooperation of all parties, including the public.

It believes the best long-term approach towards better management of PPE waste in Sarawak is that all parties play their roles to ensure the face masks and any PPE waste are disposed of properly and safely. — DayakDaily
