MIRI, Sept 4: Approximately RM30 million has been allocated under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to upgrade the entire road along Canada Hill here.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the allocation was a long-term solution to address the erosion and landslides that frequently occur in the area.
He said the project would not only involve road maintenance but also slope-related works requiring assessment and design by engineering consultants.
“This is not ordinary road repair work. We need to first look at the design and assessment by engineers to determine the best method to address the road and slope problems in this area,” he said when met after inspecting the condition of Canada Hill road here today.
Lee also called on the relevant authorities to install safety barriers at severely damaged sections as a temporary measure to ensure the safety of road users.
Meanwhile, he said immediate action was also needed as several locations had suffered damage that could endanger road users.
In this regard, he called on the Public Works Department (JKR) to assess the affected locations and prepare cost estimates to enable an application for emergency funding from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) for immediate repair works.
“The important thing now is to repair these dangerous areas first. This is an emergency measure while waiting for the overall project to be implemented,” he said.
The Canada Hill road is maintained by the Miri City Council (MCM), with JKR also assisting in assessing the condition of the affected locations. — DayakDaily
