KUCHING, Sept 4: Developers in Sarawak will be required to set aside at least 10 per cent of their project areas for green spaces as the State raises sustainability standards for future developments.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the requirement formed part of Sarawak’s broader push to make sustainability a core consideration in the development landscape.
“New developments are required to dedicate at least 10 per cent of the project area to green spaces,” he said in his speech at the opening of the SHEDA Property Expo 2026 held at voco Kuching by IHG here today. His speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
The move is among several measures being pursued by the Sarawak government to promote greener construction and development, with the government also leading by example through its own projects.
Abang Johari also said all new government buildings had been required to incorporate green features from 2025, while Building Information Modelling (BIM) would be used for government projects valued at RM10 million and above.
The government is also targeting the use of Industrialised Building System (IBS) technology in 70 per cent of future government buildings and schools.
At the same time, at least 50 per cent of products used in government building construction are targeted to be sourced locally, helping to retain the economic benefits of construction spending within Sarawak.
Meanwhile, under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government is also committed to building 20,000 affordable housing units.
Abang Johari said Integrated Results-Based Management (IRBM) was being used to streamline the government’s machinery and strengthen delivery of its commitments. — DayakDaily
