KUCHING, Aug 23: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) distributed face masks to members of the public at Kenyalang Market and Sungai Apong Market amid the ongoing haze affecting the city.

The initiative was carried out to raise public awareness about the health risks associated with poor air quality and encourage residents to take necessary precautions.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, together with MBKS councillors and community leaders, distributed the masks to hawkers, traders, market-goers and members of the public at both markets, while thanking Saramed Sdn Bhd and Tay Motors for donating the face masks to the community.

“I would like to thank Saramed Sdn Bhd and Tay Motors for coming forward to support the community during this haze situation. Such contributions are meaningful as they allow us to reach out directly to the public and remind everyone to take care of their health,” he said in a statement.

Wee urged residents not to take the haze lightly, particularly when air quality deteriorates, and advised them to keep updated on the latest air quality readings.

He said children, senior citizens and individuals who are more sensitive to poor air quality should take extra precautions.

Residents were also advised to reduce unnecessary outdoor activities when air quality reaches unhealthy levels, wear suitable face masks when outdoors, stay hydrated and keep doors and windows closed where appropriate.

Those experiencing breathing difficulties or other health concerns should seek medical attention.

“The haze affects all of us. While the authorities continue to monitor the situation, every individual also has a role to play in protecting themselves and their families.

“Please take the necessary precautions and do not underestimate the effects of prolonged exposure to unhealthy air,” he added.

MBKS said it would continue monitoring the haze situation and work with relevant agencies and community partners to safeguard the well-being of residents in Kuching South. — DayakDaily
