KUCHING, Aug 14: Serian recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in Sarawak at 182 as of 8am today, followed by Kuching and Samarahan, which both registered API readings of 172.
According to the latest data released by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak, several other locations also recorded unhealthy air quality levels, including Sri Aman (163), Sarikei (158), Mukah (152), Tebedu (150), Bintulu (142), Lundu (102) and Sibu (100).
Under Malaysia’s API classification, readings between 101 and 200 are categorised as unhealthy, indicating air quality that may pose health risks, particularly to sensitive groups.
Meanwhile, a number of northern and interior areas remained within the moderate category.
Kapit recorded an API reading of 66, while Miri (85), ILP Miri (86), Lubok Antu (91), Samalaju (98), Limbang (56), Lawas (62) and Bario (60) continued to report moderate air quality conditions.
The deteriorating air quality has heightened concerns over the health impact of haze, especially among children, senior citizens and individuals with respiratory illnesses.
The public is advised to limit outdoor activities, wear face masks when outdoors and seek medical attention if they experience haze-related health complications. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as haze conditions affect multiple parts of the State. — DayakDaily
