KUCHING, Sept 7: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has consented to end the emergency declaration across the Serian Division, which was declared on Sept 4 following the haze.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office today, the consent was given after taking into consideration the advice of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the views of the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, as well as reports from relevant agencies indicating that the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in the Serian Division are no longer at hazardous levels.
However, the haze situation in Sarawak has not yet fully recovered, and API readings in a few areas remain at the very unhealthy level.
“The federal government and the Sarawak government will continue to closely monitor the situation, while residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activities and to always comply with instructions from the authorities,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advised the public to take necessary precautions.
“This includes limiting outdoor activities and following the advice of the relevant authorities,” it said.
It added that the haze situation remains influenced by wind direction and hotspot activity, and reiterated the federal and Sarawak governments’ commitment to continuous monitoring.
On Sept 4, Sultan Ibrahim approved the declaration of an emergency throughout the Serian Division after worsening haze pushed readings above 500.
As of 10am today, Kota Samarahan had an API reading of 233, followed by Kanowit at 221. Serian recorded a reading of 200. — DayakDaily
