KUCHING, April 1: SUPP PCB chief Wilfred Yap does not want to be dragged into a “childish” blame game with DAP but instead, will continue to speak up for the people of Kota Sentosa despite the constituency being under the opposition.

He was referring to recent criticisms by a member of Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) on the plight of residents in Stampin Resettlement Scheme which is within the N12 Kota Sentosa constituency.

Yap, who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kota Sentosa chairman, pointed out that the real issue for the residents is whether DAP is effective as a conduit or channel to the government for securing development funding in Kota Sentosa when compared to constituencies represented by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and SUPP elected representatives.

“In fact, Stampin Resettlement Scheme can trace its existence back to the efforts of SUPP who secured the TOL (Temporary Occupational License) land for squatters from all over Kuching and SUPP understands their plight and predicament.

“Even though Kota Sentosa is represented by DAP, I will continue to speak out for the people of Kota Sentosa and appeal for the government to place ‘people above politics’ to increase development funding, especially for Stampin Resettlement Scheme,” he said in a statement today.

The SUPP Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) had recently assisted the residents of Stampin Resettlement Scheme to get Kuching Water Board to fix a burst main water pipe following the residents’ complaints.

Yap added that development funding is urgently needed for the reconstruction and upgrading of old and dilapidated roads and drains as infrastructure development in Stampin Resettlement Scheme has lagged over the last 15 years.

“The need for development funding in Kota Sentosa constituency (which also covers Stampin Resettlement Scheme) is because of the fast increasing number of residents living in the area.

“The reality is that the assessment rates paid by the residents to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) are never enough to carry out the necessary upgrading of infrastructure projects to better the lives of its residents and hence the need for the increased funding,” he explained.

Yap also pledged to continue to serve as the eyes and ears of the community living there to ensure that the infrastructure facilities in Kota Sentosa are in good condition and maintained properly for their benefit.

Meanwhile, SUPP PCB during their frequent activities on the ground are regularly approached by residents for assistance to carry out improvement and repair works to damaged infrastructure facilities like burst pipes, faulty street lighting, drains and roads.

Following such requests for assistance received, the problems are always communicated to the relevant authorities for their immediate action to rectify the complaints.

SUPP PCB is always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone facing problems or who come across problems of public interest but does not know how to deal with it.
