WAK 2023 set to ignite Kuching city with 40 diverse events in arts, music, culture, lifestyle and more

The 'What About Kuching' festival kicks off this Sunday (Oct 1) with three events that celebrate culture, rhythm, and music.

KUCHING, Sept 30: What About Kuching (WAK) is back for its highly anticipated month-long line-up of exciting activities galore in the heart of Kuching City starting Oct 1, with the aim to infuse vibrancy and creativity to Sarawak’s 60th Anniversary of Independence celebrations.

With the tagline ‘Celebrate Arts, Culture and Lifestyle’, this marks WAK’s 5th edition, congregating 38 collaborators from Sarawak, Sabah, Peninsula Malaysia and featuring international participation from Scotland.

Together, they will showcase their talents across an impressive array of 40 unique events spanning music, dance, theatre, arts, crafts, gastronomy and more.


Driven by its guiding principle ‘By the Community, For the Community’, WAK aspires to become one of the largest open-access festivals in Asia in the years to come, said Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) in a media release today.

Sarawak Dum Community’s Drum Shed promises an unforgettable auditory experience.

This platform provides local creatives with the opportunity to reach world-class standards in their respective genres, as they share the stage with internationally acclaimed performers.

STB invites all creative and performing arts enthusiasts to participate in a plethora of events from Oct 1 to 31, such as workshops by Musical Theatre performer Abel Law who has performed as Montparnasse for the ‘Les Misérables’ musical at the Sondheim Theatre and ‘Acoustic Guitar Artistry: An Interactive Workshop’ by guitar maestro Az Samad.

Other highlights comprise the Tuak Crafting Workshop, Haunterland, Hip-Hop Night (All Eyes on Us), Ani-Fiesta 2023, An Evening of Songs, Enchanting Fitness: Ballet Fusion & Barre Magic, ‘An Evening of Songs’ with the Dolce Chanticleer Choir, a Masterclass on production with Belle Sisoski, ‘Colours of Life’ organic tie-dye and beads-making activities for kids, ‘Pour Over’ coffee brewing workshop, Padawan Raft Safari and an array of additional engaging experiences.
