KUCHING, Sept 1: The new Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) constituency Pasir Pandak under the Santubong parliamentary constituency, as listed in the Election Commission’s (EC) proposal, was initially proposed to be named Sejinjang.
Pantai Damai assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said Sejinjang was seen as more comprehensive in representing the area, while also carrying historical value and a distinct identity closely associated with the local community.
“The initial proposed name for the new constituency was Sejinjang, not Pasir Pandak. The name Sejinjang was also listed in discussions during the earlier stages,” he said when contacted today by TVS.
He said this when asked to comment on the proposed name for the new DUN constituency following the review of the boundaries of Sarawak’s State electoral divisions currently being conducted by the EC.
For the record, the EC today began displaying its proposed new electoral boundaries for Sarawak for public inspection, including a proposal to create 17 new DUN constituencies.
Under the proposal, the number of Sarawak DUN seats would increase from 82 to 99, while the proposed new constituency under the Santubong parliamentary constituency has been designated as N.06 Pasir Pandak.
The public display will run for one month until Sept 30, 2026, allowing stakeholders, including voters and relevant parties, to examine the proposal and submit representations, objections or views to the EC in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
Dr Abdul Rahman, however, stressed that the proposed name was still under consideration and that any decision on the new constituency’s name would need to take into account the process currently being carried out by the EC. — DayakDaily
