KUCHING, Sept 1: The redelineation of Sarawak’s 17 new Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) constituencies is expected to take at least six months, leaving uncertainty over whether the process can be completed before the next State election.
In a TVS news report, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki said the timeframe could stretch further if the Election Commission’s (EC) proposed boundaries draw objections from the public.
He acknowledged that the redelineation exercise had come later than expected and believed it should have begun earlier, although he recognised the complexities involved in determining the boundaries of new constituencies.
“Personally, I think it is rather late and should have been done earlier. However, they may have their own issues that we need to understand because determining new constituencies is not an easy task,” he told reporters after attending the SIRIM Updates & Networking Session 2026 here today.
He said the actual duration of the exercise would depend on several factors, particularly public feedback and objections once the EC tables its proposed boundaries.
Asked whether the process could be completed before the next Sarawak State election, Ibrahim said it was still difficult to tell at this stage.
“We have yet to look in detail at the proposed boundaries for the 17 new DUS constituencies,” he said.
DUS approved an increase in the number of elected State seats from 82 to 99, paving the way for the creation of 17 additional constituencies. — DayakDaily
