KUCHING, Sept 1: The Election Commission (EC) is required to complete the delimitation review of Sarawak’s federal and state electoral boundaries within two years from today, following the gazettement of its proposed recommendations.
The EC today submitted five recommendations, including maintaining the number of federal constituencies in Sarawak while proposing an increase of 17 state constituencies, bringing the total number of state seats to 99.
EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said although there would be no change in the number of federal constituencies, several federal constituencies would be affected by the proposed review.
He said the review also proposed amendments to the names of one federal constituency and 10 state constituencies in Sarawak.
“For the purpose of this review of the electoral boundaries, amendments have been made to the names of one federal constituency in Sarawak.
“Amendments have also been made to the names of 10 state constituencies in Sarawak,” he said in a statement today.
The EC today began displaying a notice on the proposed addition of new constituencies and changes to constituency names in Sarawak.
Khairul Shahril said the notice on the Review of the Delimitation of Federal and State Electoral Divisions in Sarawak was gazetted today, with the recommendations open for public inspection and objections from Sept 1 to 30.
“Details of the proposed recommendations are stated in the notice published in the Gazette as well as in the Utusan Borneo and The Borneo Post newspapers,” he said.
He said copies of the recommendations and the Draft Plan of the Federal and State Electoral Divisions in Sarawak were also available for public inspection during office hours on working days at locations specified in the notice.
The recommendations can also be accessed through the EC’s online portal at myst.spr.gov.my.
Khairul Shahril said representations against the recommendations could be submitted to the EC within one month from the date the notice was published, either online through the portal or in writing to the Sarawak State Election Officer.
He said local inquiries would be held for objections submitted by the state government, any local authority whose whole or part of its area was included in constituencies affected by the recommendations, or groups of 100 or more registered voters in the affected constituencies.
The review was conducted under Clause (2) of Article 113 of the Federal Constitution, taking into account the State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Ordinance 2025, which came into force on Aug 8, 2025, he said.
The EC is required to complete the delimitation review within two years from the date the notice is gazetted. — Bernama
