KUCHING, Oct 18: A search and rescue operation is underway following a tragic boating incident that occurred near Royal Bay Commercial Centre, Jalan Buruh, Bintawa, Kuching today.

According to a statement from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), five individuals remain missing after a boat carrying 15 participants capsized during regatta training.

Bomba reported that a distress call was received at 4.20pm today, prompting an immediate response from firefighters stationed at Tabuan Jaya.

The rescue teams arrived at the scene within seven minutes, at 4.27pm. The incident site is located approximately 6 kilometres from the fire station.

Out of the 15 individuals on board, 10 were able to save themselves, while five remain missing.

Efforts by Bomba and the marine police are continuing in hopes of locating the missing individuals.

The department’s Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) has been alerted to assist in the search.
