KUCHING, April 24: SMK Long Bedian, a newly upgraded secondary school in the remote Baram district, has marked a historic milestone as one of its students, Willfred Anyie Wellis, scored straight As in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Willfred, who achieved 8As in all subjects taken, is part of the school’s first-ever SPM cohort, which consisted of 43 students.

His exceptional achievement was highlighted by Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, during the official announcement of the State’s SPM 2024 results at the Waterfront Hotel today.

“I would like to express my gratitude as SMK Long Bedian in Baram, which served as an SPM centre for the first time in 2024, successfully achieved a 100 per cent certificate eligibility rate,” he said.

“In fact, one of its candidates managed to score straight As in all subjects taken. Congratulations, and may this momentum of excellence continue in the years to come.”

Before the school was upgraded to a full secondary institution offering Form 4 and Form 5 classes, students from Long Bedian had to travel two to three hours by road to attend SMK Tutoh Apoh, the nearest school providing upper secondary education.

With its recent upgrade to Kolej 11 (K11) status, SMK Long Bedian can now accommodate students through the full secondary school cycle, allowing them to complete their studies closer to home.

Willfred’s success not only exemplifies the potential within rural schools but also marks a proud beginning for SMK Long Bedian’s journey in national-level education. — DayakDaily
