KUCHING, April 24: The rich and diverse arts and cultural heritage of ASEAN nations presents immense potential as a driver of inclusive growth, job creation, and community empowerment, said Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Delivering his welcoming remarks at the opening ceremony of the 33rd ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting at a prominent hotel here today, Tiong highlighted how ASEAN’s cultural assets — from traditional crafts and indigenous festivals to culinary traditions — are increasingly recognised not only as a reflection of shared identity but also as economic and social catalysts.

“In recent years, our region has not only advanced economically but also witnessed a growing recognition of the power of arts and cultural heritage as a catalyst for sustainable development.

“Arts and cultural tourism, in particular, has emerged as one of the most promising avenues for driving inclusive growth, creating jobs, empowering local communities, and preserving our rich traditions.

“From ancient crafts to contemporary art, from indigenous festivals to culinary legacies — our cultural assets are living expressions of our identity and shared history,” he said.

He called for stronger cross-border collaboration, more immersive cultural tourism experiences, and the integration of storytelling into tourism strategies to showcase a distinctively authentic ASEAN identity.

“Together, let us champion a tourism model that not only attracts visitors but also uplifts the soul of our nations and sustains our arts and cultural legacies for generations to come,” he urged.

Tiong also emphasised the need for continued cooperation and commitment among ASEAN member states to overcome global challenges, including health crises, climate change, and economic inequality.

The minister further expressed his gratitude to the State government and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for their co-hosting efforts and warm hospitality in making the week-long event in Kuching a success.

“Being born and bred in Sarawak, the ‘Land of the Hornbills’, this state holds a very special place in my heart,” said Tiong, welcoming the ASEAN ministers and delegates to his home state.

The ASCC Council Meeting gathers ministers from across Southeast Asia to discuss initiatives under the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Pillar, covering areas such as education, health, gender equality, environmental protection, and cultural development.
