KUCHING, Nov 10: Kuching, Miri and Bintulu have been identified for the next generation 5G network service rollout in the first phase of its implementation.

Minister for Utilities and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak Datuk Julaihi Narawi said Sibu will be included in Phase 2 of the rollout.

“As of now, we have identified 82 sites (throughout the State) that is ready for the 5G rollout, and it can it can be switched on any time,” he told a press conference after witnessing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony between Sarawak Digital Economic Corporation (SDEC) and strategic partners held at a local hotel here today.

However, Julaihi did not specify when exactly the service would be “switched on”.

Asked about the total coverage of internet so far in Sarawak this year as compared to last year, Julaihi said definitely there is progress in terms of percentage.

“I don’t have the figure with me, but I can tell you it is progressing and it is an ongoing process throughout the State,” he added.

He pointed out that with the migration from 3G to 4G network service previously, including the vast size of Sarawak and increase in the number of users in rural areas, there are definitely some blind spots in certain areas, as well as bottlenecks in terms of its implementation. — DayakDaily
