MIRI, Sept 13: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has agreed in principle to restore Sabah and Sarawak’s one-third representation in the Dewan Rakyat, marking a major breakthrough in Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) negotiations.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed the landmark consensus following high-level discussions in Kota Kinabalu alongside Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, warmly praising the Prime Minister’s willingness to honour the foundational spirit of the federation.
Speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Sarawak special convention in Miri today, he highlighted the spirit of mutual respect between Putrajaya and East Malaysia that made the accord possible.
“Safeguard Sabah and Sarawak, and the representation must be proportional so that we have one-third representation.
“If there is an increase in representatives in the peninsula, there must also be an increase in representatives in Sabah and Sarawak. The ratio must be maintained,” he said.
The Premier anchored the proposed formula directly to the foundational terms of MA63 and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report.
He framed the outcome as a landmark triumph for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), PBB and their Sabah counterparts, demonstrating the immense political leverage of a unified East Malaysian block.
“What we have been advocating through PBB and GPS, together with our friends in Sabah, has now reached a decision. Thank you to the Prime Minister.
“That is why when we are strong, our voice is strong. If we are divided, we do not carry one voice,” he added. — DayakDaily
