KUCHING, Sept 13: Megalanes Sarawak in Batu Kawa, which has been selected as the tenpin bowling venue for the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, will undergo several upgrades in preparation for the Games.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the improvements would include equipment and other facility upgrades to ensure the venue is suitable for hosting the 2027 SEA Games.
“Usually, before the SEA Games, we will organise a tournament to test the equipment and our officials once again. This is part of our plans for next year, and the venue for bowling at next year’s SEA Games will indeed be Megalanes Sarawak.
“So, we will carry out some upgrades, including improvements to the facilities and possibly other equipment,” he said when met by reporters at the 2026 Sarawak International Open Tenpin Bowling Championship (SIOTBC), which was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian at Megalanes Sarawak here on Saturday (Sept 12).
Rentap said Megalanes Sarawak had been designated by the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) as the venue for the tenpin bowling event, while the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) had identified Sarawak as the host location for the event.
In a related development, Rentap said Sarawak’s bowling team for the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) had shown encouraging performance after achieving its set targets.
He said Sarawak also hoped to recruit more young bowlers from the State into Malaysia’s elite bowling squad, particularly ahead of the upcoming SEA Games.
“We hope that for the SEA Games, our bowlers who are already in Malaysia’s elite squad, of whom there are several, especially our female bowlers Nur Hazirah and Gillian Lim, will remain in the team.
“But we also hope that younger bowlers from Sarawak will be selected. This shows, firstly, that the development of bowling in Sarawak has been effective and that we have produced several national-level elite athletes,” he said. — DayakDaily
