LAWAS, June 10: Firefighters were deployed to Kampung Dato Kuala Lawas today after reports of gas emitting from the ground at a construction site along the Northern Coastal Highway project.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the incident was reported directly to the Lawas fire station at 12.33pm by members of the public who noticed gas escaping from the ground at the site.
A team from the Lawas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Lawas), led by operations commander PPgB Clarence D. Primus Tiandun, arrived at the location at 12.50pm to conduct monitoring and assess the situation.
Initial investigations found that the gas emission occurred after a contractor carried out drilling works at the highway construction site to an estimated depth of 45 metres.
As of 1.25pm, the ground surface where the gas was detected remained active and continued to release gas.
As a precautionary measure, firefighters established a safety perimeter extending 30 metres from the affected area. The contractor was also advised to immediately halt drilling activities at the location.
No injuries or casualties were reported.
A total of 10 personnel from BBP Lawas were involved in the operation, assisted by a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, and a Toyota Hilux D-Max utility vehicle.
The situation remained under monitoring by the relevant authorities. — DayakDaily
