MIRI, April 23: The new Darul Khairat Mosque in Kampung Bakam, worth RM6.74 million and could accommodate 1,150 worshippers at any one time, was officiated by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg last night (April 22).

The mosque, located in the coastal area of Miri, underwent its second construction since it was established in 1993.

According to a press statement on the event, the mosque was initially built with an allocation of RM80,000 on a piece of one-acre land.

However, in 2018, the Sarawak government approved an allocation of RM6.74 million to rebuild the mosque. The funding came from the State government and through wakaf and infaq of the mosque congregation.

The mosque is constantly upgraded from time to time, following its growing function and site area of 3.4 acres.

The first mosque for Kampung Bakam was built in 1940, but due to the increasing population, a second mosque named Ikhwanul Mukminin Mosque was built in 1977.

On August 19, 1992, Darul Khairat Mosque was built to cater for residents of the coastal area and nearby villages such as Kampung Raan, Kampung Pusil, Kampung Siwak Jaya, Kampung Bakam, and Kampung Nelayan Kuala Bakam.

Amongst those present were Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; Utility Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; Women and Childhood Development Deputy Minister Datuk Rosey Yunus; Community Wellbeing Development Deputy Minister Mohamad Razi Sitam; Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Deputy Minister Dr Ripin Lamat; and Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee. — DayakDaily
