SIBU, April 6: The frequent water supply interruptions in most parts of the town will be over end of this month with the installation of another 1,000mm main pipe that would boost water pressure from Teku, Ulu Sungai Merah, Pasai Siong and Rantau Panjang water treatment plants.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang informed that the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) is in the midst of installing another 1,000mm main pipe to increase the total length to 1,600mm.

“During the implementation of this project, the public has been experiencing low water supply.

“There were also water pipes bursting these few weeks. But according to SWB, this project is expected to be completed within this month,” he told reporters after attending a briefing at Sibu Water Board (SWB) office today.

With that, the Pelawan assemblyman said water pressure will see improvement in the west side of the town which includes Pasai Siong, Ulu Sungai Merah and Teku as well as the east part of Sibu Jaya.

However, he is aware that more needs to be done to totally overcome the low water supply issue.

“I believe this is not enough, so we want to push for further upgrade of the water supply system by installing more boosters and high-level water tanks,” he said while pledging to get more fundings from the Sarawak government for SWB to carry out the water projects for the next five years, especially for Pelawan constituency.

Tiang also advised households to install their own tanks as back-up to store water for use in the event of water supply interruptions.

“Some households do not have their own water tanks so they were badly affected, especially during the last month with frequent water supply interruption,” he said.

Earlier, SWB assistant general manager Lau Pon Yin gave brief on the projects during the meeting which was also attended by
