SIBU, Aug 24: Motorists using the congested Jalan Ling Kai Cheng-Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah junction can expect shorter waiting times once a RM2.34 million widening project gets underway next month to improve traffic flow.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the Phase Two upgrading project would widen about 200 metres of the junction from two lanes to four.
“Two lanes will be used for vehicles travelling straight, while the other two will be provided for vehicles turning right, with one lane designated for U-turns,” he said.
He said the project was expected to begin in September and take about four months to complete.
The Pelawan assemblyman said the redesigned junction would be similar to the one at Jalan Woon Soon Kai, which had received positive feedback from residents in Jalan Kandis, Jalan Sena and Jalan Camar.
“They said after the junction was widened, the waiting time became shorter and traffic flow was smoother,” he said.
He also urged motorists to be patient during the construction period, as the works were expected to cause some temporary inconvenience.
The project is part of efforts to improve connectivity and traffic flow along Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, which was upgraded along its entire 1.2km stretch last year at a cost of more than RM3.7 million.
Separately, Tiang said the entire 500-metre stretch of Jalan Lilin would also be upgraded at a cost of RM350,000.
He said the Jalan Lilin project was expected to take between one and two months to complete, compared with the standard construction period of about four months. — DayakDaily
