SIBU, July 31: The Sarawak government’s commitment to strengthening facilities at places of worship of various faiths continues through the implementation of a Rural Transformation Project (RTP) worth RM100,000 to upgrade facilities at Peace Methodist Church here.
The completed project involved replacing aluminium louvre windows with glass windows, repairing the ceiling, carrying out waterproofing works, and installing lighting to improve the comfort and safety of the building for religious and community activities.
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak and Pelawan assemblyman Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the project enables the church’s upper floor to be utilised more effectively for various community activities, including church programmes and recreational activities.
He said the window replacement allows the upper floor to be used more comfortably for various community activities, including table tennis and church programmes.
“This is the first RTP project we have implemented for maintenance works at this church,” he said after conducting a final inspection of the project today, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
He said the inspection found that the project had been completed satisfactorily. However, the church informed him that there was still leakage from the ceiling on the top floor of the four-storey building.
In this regard, another RTP project proposal will be considered to carry out waterproofing works in that area as a continuation of efforts to upgrade the church’s facilities.
Tiang added that Peace Methodist Church, which has about 300 members, had previously received assistance from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to carry out several major upgrading projects.
He said the RTP project complements the existing improvement efforts to ensure the church’s facilities continue to meet the needs of the local community.
As the elected representative, he said he was only helping to implement additional improvements in areas that still required attention.
He added that churches play an important role in uniting the community, providing space for community activities, and supporting residents, particularly senior citizens. — DayakDaily
