KUCHING, Apr 15: Sarawak is studying the possibility of connecting Bintulu Port and Samalaju Industrial Park via a rail network that would form a “three-satellite” transport system to enable quicker and more efficient movement of goods and people across Bintulu, Kidurong and Samalaju.

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Sarawak government is currently conducting a feasibility study on a proposed rail link connecting the three key industrial and port zones.

“This rail link will strengthen logistics connectivity and support industrial development in the Bintulu-Samalaju corridor,” he said.

He highlighted this when delivering his speech at the 30th anniversary celebration of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad at a hotel here on Tuesday (Apr 14).

Against the backdrop of Sarawak’s expanding industrial base, he noted that efficient logistics systems are becoming increasingly important to maintain competitiveness in global supply chains.

Abang Johari added that the proposed rail connection is also expected to support a shift towards greener transportation by reducing reliance on road-based cargo movement between industrial facilities and port operations.

“The feasibility study is currently underway to assess the technical and economic viability of the project,” he said. — DayakDaily
