KUCHING, Aug 21: Sarawak’s interests in exploring closer cooperation with Brunei, particularly in the energy, renewable energy, agriculture, economic and tourism sectors, are expected to feature prominently as Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg joins Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a two-day working visit to Brunei Darussalam.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Abang Johari arrived in Brunei at 4.54pm today and was welcomed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, together with members of the Sarawak delegation.
The Premier is among the leaders accompanying Anwar to the 27th Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC-27) between Malaysia and Brunei, which will be held with Brunei Sultan Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah at Istana Nurul Iman on Saturday.
Also accompanying the Prime Minister are Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Mohamad Hasan, as well as several other ministers and senior government officials.
For Sarawak, the visit is expected to provide an opportunity to further explore areas of mutual interest with Brunei, particularly in energy, renewable energy, agriculture, economic development and tourism.
Cooperation in the energy sector has continued to expand through the efforts of Sarawak Energy and Brunei’s Department of Electrical Services under the Tudan-Lumut Interconnection (SPARK) project, which is aimed at strengthening electricity connectivity between Sarawak and Brunei.
Trade and tourism ties have also been strengthened with the establishment of the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei (STATOB) in October 2024, providing a platform to promote Sarawak as a trade, investment and tourism destination.
ALC-27 serves as the highest platform for bilateral consultations between Malaysia and Brunei, providing an avenue for the two countries to review and advance bilateral relations and cooperation across areas of mutual interest. — DayakDaily
