KUCHING, Nov 6: In a dazzling celebration of educational excellence, Muhammad Nazmi Rosli, an English teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Long Sebangan, Lawas in Sarawak, won the top honour and took home a cash prize of RM50,000 at the Malaysia Teacher Prize 2023 ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday (Nov 5).

According to Bernama, Muhammad Nazmi was chosen for his efforts to make his lessons more interesting by incorporating common life experiences, such as entering a laundromat or boarding an aeroplane, in the classroom using recycled materials.

As the founder of Kelab Filpen (a short film club), Muhammad Nazmi said he also gave his students opportunities to express themselves by creating short films, including ‘Teether’, which was accepted at the Horror Unleashed film festival in Portugal.

As he reflected on his triumph, the English teacher expressed profound gratitude that his perseverance had been rewarded.

“For me, this platform is an opportunity to not only share the story of our daily lives as educators but also to highlight the roots of our life goals, both inside and outside the classroom,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated at a press conference that the Ministry of Education (MOE) continues prioritising poor schools to close the education gap in the interior of Sarawak and Sabah.

She claims that, in accordance with the Budget 2024, the MOE will prioritise the construction of new schools in the interior while ensuring that Sarawak and Sabah are not neglected.

“We want that (school) balance to happen, and when we talk about co-curricular development and character development, it also includes infrastructure development,” she went on to say. — DayakDaily
