KUCHING, Nov 6: New motor vehicle license (LKM) for electric vehicles (EVs) will be introduced next month, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

According to a news report from Bernama, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the new road tax structure will be implemented starting in 2026, following the end of the road tax exemption period for EVs, which is until December 31, 2025.

He said the government is aware of the concerns regarding high road tax after the exemption period voiced by EV vehicle owners.

He also said that his Ministry had presented to the National EV Task Force to ensure the new structure is more competitive to encourage people to embrace EVs, including developing the ecosystem and charging stations.

On February 15, 2022, the Transport Ministry, through the Road Transport Department (JPJ), introduced the road tax exemption for EVs, which applied to battery and fuel (hydrogen) EVs but not hybrid vehicles.

The exemption is valid from January 2022 until December 2025. — DayakDaily
