SIBU, Jan 12: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) will implement hotel and lodging licencing for commercial shophouses within its area of jurisdiction.

Its chairman, Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said, the council will start imposing certain actions on operators if they fail to comply with the rules.

“The council will monitor and inspect related premises at the end of March to carry out enforcement.

“The purpose of this is to ensure that the licensed premises meet the prescribed conditions such as having a fire certificate and so on for the safety of the public staying there,” he said at a press conference here this afternoon.

He said this need had been voiced since 2019 when SRDC had four to five such premises within its jurisdiction.

According to Sempurai, dialogues with these business owners have been held two to three times but response from them on the matter has been poor.

“This forces the council to take serious action by imposing the rules.

“The council will strictly monitor matters related to the development of hotels, rental rooms and related in our area because they need to be licensed with certain conditions starting this year,” he stressed.

Sempurai said, applications for hotels, rental rooms and inns that are operating in commercial buildings in SRDC’s administrative area are now open.

He reminded entrepreneurs to comply with all the terms and conditions as stipulated in the application form.

“Cooperation is strongly required from all relevant parties to ensure that those who wish to run a hotel/rental room/inn business are reminded to obtain an application form from MDLBS (SRDC).

“Application forms are available at the Health and Municipal Services Division located at Level 17, Wisma Sanyan, Jalan Sanyan, 96000 Sibu,” he added. — DayakDaily
