SIBU, March 14: Swift action has been taken to ensure cleanliness at Sibu Airport after a photo of a rat at one of the airport’s eateries went viral.

“Following complaints of rats at a food premises on Feb 24, we have immediately conducted monitoring and inspections. I can say that the cleanliness level at all premises at Sibu Airport is satisfactory, said Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.

Speaking at a press conference here yesterday, he said the council’s health officers had reported back that the cleanliness situation is satisfactory and there were no more issues.

“We have also not issued any fines or directives because so far the situation is satisfactory, and this is the result of our inspection,” he said.

He added that with the cooperation of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, inspections were conducted at all premises within the airport to ensure cleanliness was maintained.

“All food handlers undergo health inspections and attend food handling courses; we also ensure that there is no rat or cockroach in the premises as well as ensuring rat and insect control is carried out,” he said.

SRDC also conducted activities to install rat traps around Sibu Airport to detect the presence of rats.

“The results of rat trap installations (outside the compound) found that the presence of rats has been detected in the airport area.

“The airport management has been informed, and a letter has been issued to take rat control measures to eliminate rat breeding grounds in the airport area,” he added.

Sempurai emphasised that they take these complaints seriously and will periodically monitor the rat control activities carried out by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.

He urged all parties to cooperate in maintaining good cleanliness standards of the airport area. — DayakDaily
