SARIKEI, June 3: The construction of a seven-storey pagoda at the Sarikei Orthodox Buddhist Association is set to become a new landmark for the town, while also serving as a tourism attraction that is expected to further enhance Sarikei’s appeal in the years ahead.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Sarikei MP Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii said the project is funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).
“It will not only function as a centre for the propagation of Buddhist teachings but also holds strong potential to support the growth of the local tourism sector,” he said in his speech at the Wesak Day celebration organised by the Sarikei Orthodox Buddhist Association, held at the premises on Sunday (May 31).
In another development, the Repok assemblyman revealed that the government is also carrying out a road widening project along the Nyelong Bypass in front of the association.
“It will be upgraded into a four-lane road to improve traffic flow and enhance comfort for road users,” he added.
Speaking on the Wesak celebration, he said the occasion carries profound messages of compassion, wisdom, and harmony, which are values that remain essential in nurturing a peaceful and united community.
“Sarawak’s strength lies in our multi-racial and multi-religious society, which must continue to uphold mutual respect, tolerance, and cooperation to preserve the state’s stability and unity,” he added.
At the same event, Huang announced a RM20,000 allocation to the Sarikei Orthodox Buddhist Association to support its religious and community programmes.
