KUCHING, June 3: Since opening her nail salon at the OneJaya shopping complex three years ago, 22-year-old manicurist Yii Hui Li has found deep fulfilment in seeing how her manicure and pedicure services bring confidence and joy to her regular clients.

Her interest in nail artistry began in childhood, inspired by watching her mother care for her nails. That early exposure sparked an appreciation for the craft, as well as a shared sense of creativity and bonding between mother and daughter.

Seven years ago, during the Covid-19 pandemic, her education was disrupted. Faced with uncertainty, her family decided it would be more practical for her to pursue hands-on skills that could lead to a stable career.

With their encouragement, Yii completed a three-year internship at a local nail salon, laying the groundwork for her to eventually establish her own business at OneJaya.

Before entering the beauty industry, she had considered pursuing culinary work, influenced by her mother’s Kolo Mee stall business. However, the pandemic shifted her family’s priorities, as they navigated financial and economic challenges like many others at the time.

“I am very grateful to the salon that trained me and to my former employers, friends, and family who supported me when I started my own business,” she told DayakDaily.

Today, Yii focuses on manicures, eyelash extensions, and spa pedicures for her loyal clientele, having previously offered a wider range of beauty services.

She said many of her customers view their appointments as a form of self-care and relaxation, describing her salon as a space where they can unwind from daily stress.

“Some even shared that regular nail care has become an essential part of their personal grooming routine.

“To me, nothing is more rewarding than seeing my clients happy. That’s how I know I’ve done my best,” she said, adding that completing each nail design from start to finish gives her a strong sense of accomplishment.

To create a welcoming atmosphere, Yii decorates her salon with uplifting messages such as “You are beautiful today.”

Her business, named “Beauty Fairy,” reflects her intention to create a warm, positive space for customers.

“That’s why I named my shop Beauty Fairy—it’s memorable and sets a friendly tone,” she said with a laugh.

Looking ahead, Yii hopes to grow her business further while encouraging young people to consider skills-based careers as a pathway to independence and stability.

“I’m not sure what the best advice is for young people, but learning a skill like nail care has given me a strong foundation. There are many similar trades that can offer the same,” she said.

“At my age, I feel independent, and I’ve been able to help improve my family’s life. I hope more young people can stay positive and explore these opportunities.”
