KUCHING, July 14: Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem has called for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak to provide more fire safety courses to villages and form community fire brigades in the district.

Riot said that training and knowledge will help the locals in preventing major fire breakouts, including controlling the situation until the arrival of emergency services.

Referring to the fire incident that broke out in Kampung Krusen Siu recently, he pointed out that those who initially saw the fire breakout attempted to put it out with water in the hopes that it would work.

“If they had taken a fire safety course, they would know that water might not always be the right approach to extinguish a flame. If they had fire extinguishers, the flame might not have spread,” he told reporters during his visit to Kampung Krusen Siu yesterday (July 13).
