One dead, five survived in 4×4 crash near Punan Bar, Belaga

KUCHING, April 20: A man was killed while five others were injured in a single-vehicle accident involving a 4×4 Toyota Prado that plunged into a 15-metre-deep ravine along Jalan Jiwa Murni, just before Punan Bar in Belaga today.

The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Wielie Blata, the driver of the vehicle, who was confirmed dead at Bintulu Hospital after being pinned beneath the overturned vehicle.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak, the emergency call was received at 4.15pm, and a team from the Belaga fire station was dispatched to the scene, located about 42km away. The firefighters arrived at 5.30pm.

Bomba’s initial report stated that six individuals—three men and three women—all from Punan Ba, Belaga, were involved in the crash.

“Four victims were rescued by members of the public and sent to Belaga Health Clinic before the firefighters arrived.

“Another female victim, who suffered a head injury, was found outside the vehicle and was brought up from the ravine using a scoop stretcher by the rescue team.

“She was later handed over to medical personnel from Belaga Health Clinic,” the report said.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased driver was extricated after firefighters used a fire rescue vehicle (FRV) to lift the vehicle.

His remains were handed over to the police and transported to Bintulu Hospital.

Police later confirmed his death, based on a report from the Ministry of Health. — DayakDaily
