SIBU, June 19: The Immigration Department Sibu successfully detained 84 undocumented migrants during a coordinated enforcement operation, codenamed Ops Gegar and Ops Sapu, conducted across the city on Wednesday (June 18).
In a TVS news report, Sarawak Immigration director Abdul Halim Abang Naili said the operation, conducted between midnight and 3am, involved 12 members of the Special Operations Team and was based on internal intelligence.
“The operation targeted two premises — a karaoke entertainment centre (KTV) and a shophouse suspected of being sites of illegal activity and housing for undocumented foreign nationals,” he said in a statement today.
A total of 110 individuals were inspected, with 84 arrested for various immigration offences.
Those detained comprised 67 men and 17 women, including three Indonesian men and 17 Indonesian women, one Myanmar national, and 63 Pakistani men.
According to Abdul Halim, the detainees are suspected of committing offences under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid passes or permits, Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act for overstaying their permitted duration, and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for misuse of visit passes or permits.
All detainees have been taken to the Immigration Detention Depot for further action.
Abdul Halim emphasised that enforcement efforts will continue to be intensified to uphold the rule of law, and he urged employers, premise owners, and the public not to harbour undocumented migrants, warning that legal action will be taken without compromise. — DayakDaily
