MIRI, July 17: A total of 175 illegal immigrants were detained in an integrated operation that took place at a workers’ housing settlement in Linau Mewah Estate, Jalan Lambir, here on Wednesday (July 15).
In a statement, the operation—dubbed ‘Ops MEGA’—was led by the Sarawak Immigration Department (JIM) through its enforcement unit and began at about 11.35pm.
During the operation, 250 foreign nationals were inspected, resulting in the detention of 175 Indonesian nationals suspected of committing offences under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 [Act 155].
Of those detained, 90 were men, 53 were women, and 32 were children.
The operation involved 57 enforcement personnel, comprising 30 officers and personnel from the Sarawak JIM, 10 officers from the Labour Department (JTK), nine officers from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), four personnel from the Marine Police Force (PDRM), and four personnel from the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS). Inspections concluded at about 4am.
All those detained were taken to the Bekenu Immigration Depot for investigation and further action.
“The Sarawak Immigration Department will continue to intensify integrated enforcement operations to ensure compliance with immigration laws and to combat the presence of illegal immigrants in the State,” said the department. — DayakDaily
