KUCHING, July 31: Police seized various suspected duty-unpaid cigarettes and alcoholic beverages worth approximately RM92,000 during a raid on a premises along Jalan Temenggong Salau in Bau on Thursday (July 30).
In a statement, Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said that the raid, conducted at 10.15am, was carried out by a team from the Sarawak Brigade Intelligence Branch of the General Operations Force (PGA) following approximately 30 minutes of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
The raid also led to the arrest of an 18-year-old local man, believed to be an employee at the premises, after he failed to produce valid ownership documents for the seized goods.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect had been working at the premises for the past two months and was paid in cash. The suspect also informed police that the supply of the cigarettes and alcoholic beverages had been obtained from a local man who is currently being tracked by police,” he said.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possessing or handling duty-unpaid goods, and that a remand application will be ordered against the suspect to facilitate further investigations. — DayakDaily
