SIBU, May 13: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak proposes building a fire station in Bukit Lima.

Its director, Datu Khirudin Drahman, said the proposal to establish a new fire station would speed up emergency response time, and considering the rapid development in the area.

“We have submitted the proposal to the relevant parties,” he told the media after attending the Sibu Central Fire and Rescue Station Aidilfitri celebration last night (May 12).

According to him, areas such as Kemuyang and Jalan Oya, which are also developing rapidly with highways apart from buildings and housing, may also need another new station.

“The concerned parties are still considering the proposed fire station in Bukit Lima. But all that also depends on the government’s financial resources,” he stressed.

In other developments, he said, his department will continue to ensure that the four new stations in Stampin, Julau, Lubok Antu, and Batang Lupar are built.

He said, of the 31 parliamentary constituencies in the region, only 27 constituencies have fire stations. In comparison, 34 state constituencies have stations.

“Sarawak has 82 state constituencies, of which 34 already have their own fire stations.

“To deal with this problem, we have a short-term programme to train the community to put out and prevent fires because Sarawak is big.

“We supply them with fire extinguishers and train them. We need the community to help us while we wait for a fire station in their area,” he said. — DayakDaily
