MIRI, Sept 11: A man was killed while five others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a road accident involving two lorries along the Pan Borneo Highway between Bintulu and Miri this afternoon.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Batu Niah responded to the emergency at 2.33pm and immediately dispatched a team of firefighters to the scene.
According to the department, the accident involved two prime mover lorries and six victims.
One victim was found trapped inside a vehicle and had suffered severe injuries, including multiple wounds and fractures. He was unconscious when rescuers arrived and was later pronounced dead at the scene by Ministry of Health personnel.
Among the other victims, one sustained minor injuries to the mouth, another suffered head injuries, while a third victim experienced swelling to the left hand. One individual escaped unharmed.
Meanwhile, another victim had already been extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance before the arrival of firefighters.
Firefighters carried out rescue operations to remove the remaining trapped victim from the vehicle using a stretcher before handing the victim over to medical personnel and the police for further action.
The operation, led by incident commander PBK I Westen Doivit, concluded at 4.27pm after firefighters have ensured the area was safe. — DayakDaily
