KUCHING, May 13: The ‘Malay Proclamation’ issue is not applicable in the context of Sarawak, says Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Sarawak commissioner Jofri Jaraiee.

Noting the party’s top brass has expressed support for the proclamation, he emphasised that it is a matter specific to Malaya which bears no relation to Sarawak.

“It’s not that we have clashing opinions (between the national PAS and PAS Sarawak) but we have to look at an issue in the context of where we live.

“For an example, if we go to the longhouses, we must follow the customs of the longhouse. It does not mean that we embrace the customs but it signifies a show of respect.

“Thus, the issue (Malay Proclamation) is relevant in the context of Malaya. In Sarawak, we follow Sarawak ways,” he told reporters during PAS Sarawak’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Taman Matang Jaya here today.

Jofri highlighted that PAS Sarawak maintains an open attitude and understands the rationale behind the top brass’ support for the Malay Proclamation in Malaya.

He also cited an example of the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) government where leaders owrk together at the federal-level, but in Sarawak, Democratic Action Party (DAP) leaders remain on opposition bloc to the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

The Malay Proclamation, initiated by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is a 12-point document that highlighted the issues faced by the Malays and their future.
