KUCHING, June 17: PPES Ternak Sdn Bhd held its first-ever ‘Cattle Auction Day’ at their Siburan Halal Abattoir Complex today.
Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity And Regional Development (Ficord) Martin Ben said 59 cows of various weight category groups would be auctioned for sale.
He said these cows, including Brahman, Angus, Limousin and Simmental breeds imported from Australia, were of high quality.
“Of the total number of cows for auction today, 39 cows weighing an average of 500kg costs RM11,000 per head, 13 cows weighing an average of 550kg costs RM12,100 per head, and seven cows an average of 600kg costs RM13,200 per head.”
“The auction sale is the first in Sarawak, and PPES Ternak is carrying out this activity today in conjunction with the coming Hari Raya Qurban celebration.
“It is a way to market and promote the supply chain in marketing beef in Sarawak, and such activity can bring together local buyers and sellers here,” he said before officiating the auction sale event.
He said cattle here are certified by the World Organisation Animal Health (WOAH) as being free from Foot And Mouth Disease (FMD).
“For this reason we are stringent in the programme of controlling FMD, and this is important for us as that will allow us to import cattle from countries free of FMD such as Australia and New Zealand,” he said.
Also present at the auction was FICORD permanent secretary Sirai Daha, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, Veterinary Service Department Sarawak director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud and PPES Ternak general manager Artino Arshad. — DayakDAily
