KUCHING, April 24: As of March this year, Sarawak recorded 581,775 visitor arrivals from Asean countries, with Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia contributing a dominant 67 per cent and 28 per cent respectively, highlighting the region’s crucial role in Sarawak’s tourism growth.

Highlighting this, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah emphasised that Asean remains Sarawak’s top tourism market, accounting for over 2.6 million arrivals in 2024, representing more than 55 per cent of the State’s total visitor numbers.

“Asean has always stood for harmony and cooperation, and through events like this, we reaffirm our shared commitment to deeper understanding and continuous collaboration.

“Here, amidst the warmth of our people and the richness of our traditions, we find the inspiration to embrace the diversity that nurtures our Asean identity,” he said during a gala dinner held in conjunction with the 33rd Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex tonight.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan represented Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to officiate the gala dinner.

Drawing parallels between Sarawak and the broader Asean community, he said the Sarawak Legislative Assembly—a landmark that blends modern engineering with traditional Dayak and Melanau architecture—symbolises the same values of unity, governance and protection that Asean holds dear.

He pointed out that the building’s royal umbrella-shaped roof echoes the spirit of inclusivity, cultural pride, and shared purpose embraced by both Sarawak and Asean.

“Just as this Assembly houses a diverse population under one roof, Asean unites the region under a common vision of peace, prosperity, and protection of culture and heritage,” he said.

Abdul Karim also reaffirmed Sarawak’s alignment with Asean’s 2025 vision of ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, noting that Sarawak’s green economy initiatives, commitment to indigenous rights, and inclusive development model are clear examples of how the State contributes to Asean’s long-term goals.

“Sarawak’s strength lies in its cultural diversity and its dedication to balanced growth. We are on the same wavelength as Asean—proving that environmental stewardship and social unity can go hand in hand,” he added.

Amidst ongoing global trade tensions, Abdul Karim called on Asean member states to remain united in promoting sustainability and ensuring shared prosperity.

He also extended his gratitude to Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia Dato Sri Tiong King Sing and his team for organising the 33rd ASCC Council Meeting in Sarawak, the Gateway to Borneo.

The evening concluded with a vibrant showcase of Sarawak’s cultural performances, leaving guests with a lasting impression of the State’s warm hospitality and Asean spirit. — DayakDaily
