DEBAK, Aug 17: Saribas assemblyman Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam proposed that the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) build a new water treatment plant with a capacity of between five and 10 million litres per day (MLD) and elevated water tanks to tackle the recurring annual water supply crisis in several areas of Debak and Spaoh within his constituency.

In a TVS news report, he said these facilities were important to reduce reliance on the Lubau and Kaki Wong Water Treatment Plants along Jalan Saratok, while ensuring a more stable water supply during dry seasons and high-tide phenomena.

Mohammad Razi said the area faces three main issues: dwindling water sources during the dry season, seawater intrusion, and low water pressure affecting residents’ daily needs.

“My suggestion to MUT is to build another water treatment plant with a capacity of five or 10 MLD. If it is 10 MLD, that would be better as it could complement the existing plants.

“The problems of drought and seawater intrusion during high-tide phenomena recur every year, and this should serve as a lesson for us to plan a long-term solution,” he said when met after the closing ceremony of the Kompak Programme (Caring, Active and Competent Community) at Dewan Perpaduan Debak today.

For the proposed elevated water tanks, he said they would meet the needs of residents in Kampung Sepak, Kampung Merdang, Kampung Tui, and Kampung Serabang, which have relatively high population densities and extensive residential areas.

He said the facilities would not only help meet residents’ daily needs but also improve water pressure, particularly during peak periods and festive seasons.

He also hoped the proposals would receive due consideration and be included among MUT’s priorities to ensure the water supply problems in Debak and surrounding areas could be resolved comprehensively and sustainably. — DayakDaily
