SIMUNJAN, Aug 25: Long-standing water supply problems in Simunjan are set to be addressed through a RM45.7 million project to replace and upgrade 73.2 kilometres of ageing water pipes across the district.
Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee said the project is part of the government’s efforts to tackle frequent water supply disruptions, particularly those caused by ageing pipelines prone to leaks and damage.
She said the broader pipe replacement and upgrading project in the Samarahan area, which includes Simunjan, covers 148.3 kilometres of pipelines at a total cost of RM84.37 million.
“Of the overall project in Samarahan, almost half involves Simunjan, covering approximately 73.2 kilometres at a cost of around RM45.7 million,” she said, as reported by TVS.
Rodiyah was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Simunjan District Maulidur Rasul celebration at Dewan Mesra Simunjan here today.
She said the project would be implemented in phases, with some works expected to begin towards the end of this year and the remainder next year.
The overall project is expected to be completed in stages by 2029.
However, Rodiyah acknowledged that the timeframe could seem lengthy for residents who continue to experience water supply disruptions.
In the interim, several short-term measures are being planned to alleviate the situation, including the construction of an elevated water tank in Kampung Hijrah.
The tank is expected to be fully completed by August next year and will help improve water supply to areas affected by disruptions while the main pipeline project is being carried out.
“The elevated water tank project is expected to assist areas affected by water supply disruptions while we wait for the main project to be completed,” she said.
Rodiyah added that she and Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris would continue working closely with the relevant ministries and agencies to strengthen short-term measures and ensure the water supply situation is addressed progressively.
She also urged residents to cooperate with the authorities and contractors, particularly during the implementation of the new pipeline works, to ensure the project proceeds smoothly and with minimal disruption to the community. — DayakDaily
