KUCHING, Sept 6: Police have arrested two local men, aged 38 and 36, following a viral video depicting a cable theft and criminal intimidation incident near Kubah Ria along Jalan Matang, Petra Jaya.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that the arrests were made by a team from the Kuching District Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at 10.50pm on Saturday (Sept 5).
The incident was reported to have taken place around 3.23am on Sept 4.
“During the operation, police seized a blue Proton Iswara, a white Toyota Vios, a cable cutter, and a set of car keys believed to be linked to the investigation.
“A background check revealed that both suspects have a total of 17 prior criminal records—nine involving the first suspect and eight involving the second suspect.
“Both suspects also tested positive for drugs following urine screening tests,” he said in a press statement today.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The case is also being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which provides for up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Police are currently hunting down another accomplice who remains at large.
Members of the public are advised to stay vigilant of their surroundings and report any criminal activities to the police.

On Sept 4, a brave bystander recorded the group in the act at 3.23am, only for the suspects to aggressively confront and verbally threaten him in an attempt to intimidate him before fleeing the scene.
The footage, which quickly went viral on social media, showed the group using specialized heavy-duty cable cutters and relying on two vehicles—a blue Proton Iswara and a white Toyota Vios—as getaway transport. — DayakDaily
