SELANGOR, Sept 6: Nineteen-year-old Anson Tiong turned the pressure of his first Para Malaysia Games (SUKMA) appearance into a performance that gave Sarawak its first para powerlifting gold.
Making his debut at the Games, Anson produced a best lift of 97kg in the men’s 49kg (M49 A) category to secure the top spot and open Sarawak’s para powerlifting campaign with a gold medal, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
He began confidently with a successful 91kg lift before raising his mark to 95kg on his second attempt.
He then went for 97kg on his final attempt and successfully completed the lift, finishing two kilograms ahead of Sabah’s Myzos Majantin, who settled for silver with 95kg.
Negeri Sembilan’s Roozaimi Johari took bronze with a best lift of 94kg.
Anson’s performance was particularly significant as he entered the competition without previous Para SUKMA experience, yet held his composure through all three attempts to emerge as Sarawak’s first para powerlifting gold medallist at the Games.
The victory also gives the young lifter a major milestone early in his Para SUKMA career, while strengthening Sarawak’s challenge in the para powerlifting events.
Other competitors in the category included Negeri Sembilan’s Imran Wafi, who recorded 90kg, Melaka’s Sherwin Kumar with 80kg, Selangor’s Adam Milkail with 65kg, Kelantan’s Adam Arsyad with 61kg, Selangor’s Kamarulaiman with 48kg and Federal Territories’ Svaarilaah with 40kg. — DayakDaily
