New Tourism minister prepared to tackle challenges to Malaysia’s tourism sector

Dato Sri Nancy Shukri

KUCHING, Mar 10: Newly minted Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri has pledged her commitment in coming up with effective solutions and long-term economic measures to manage the country’s tourism sector.

As Malaysia faces challenges on both the global and local front today, Nancy said she was aware that many industry players, especially in the tourism sector and airline industries were facing trying times.

“I am fully aware that this journey will not be a smooth one. With the apparent impact of COVID-19 on world economies, businesses and routines are severely and adversely affected. Coupled with the downward trend of crude oil prices, it is clear that we have to work harder to overcome the challenges ahead.

“However, I believe our economy is resilient enough to face these challenges and with this new Cabinet line up, we shall take advantage of all opportunities available to persevere through thìs crisis,” she said in a statement.

Thanking the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for their trust and confidence in her appointment, Nancy gave the assurance that she will endeavour to continue serving the people of Malaysia regardless of race, religion and political alliances.

In the course of running the tourism office, she added that she will continue to uphold the principles of fairness and equity, particularly in putting the needs of the country and the people first.

Her focus will be on delivery with the notion of accountability to the Rakyat.

Meanwhile, to the people of Sarawak, she assured that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will remain focused and steadfast in the course of ensuring the state’s constitutional rights and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) are preserved and safeguarded.

“To my constituents in Batang Sadong, I am still the same Nancy Shukri you know, and will continue to serve you in my capacity as your Member of Parliament,” she said. —DayakDaily
