KUCHING, June 13: The Ministry of Education (MoE) has dismissed claims that it only acts on allegations of misconduct involving its teachers after such cases go viral.

In a Free Malaysia Today (FMT) report, MoE minister Fadhlina Sidek said in such cases, parents and teachers report them to the authorities to enable investigations to be conducted.

She further explained that subsequent action is also taken, such as bringing affected students to the social welfare department for protection and health checkups

However, she urged district education offices nationwide to be on alert for such cases and not wait for them to stir controversy online or to go viral before taking action.

“Anyone with information about sexual harassment and other cases needs to report them directly to the authorities. Don’t use social media to report them, as it leads nowhere. Reporting to the authorities is the right course of action.

“We ask all members of the community to firmly adopt this stance as it involves children who must be protected,” she said to reporters during a programme in George Town, Penang, today.

She was responding to a case in Sarawak in which the education department has confirmed that a teacher in the State linked to allegations of sexual misconduct that recently surfaced on social media has been temporarily reassigned to a district education office (PPD) while investigations are ongoing. — DayakDaily
