BAU, Sept 3: Three motorcyclists have been identified and detained after a video showing them performing dangerous “Superman” stunts and racing along Jalan Bau-Batu Kawa went viral on social media.
The roughly 40-second video showed the three riders allegedly racing each other on the public road while performing dangerous manoeuvres, including the “Superman” stunt, in which a rider lies face down on a moving motorcycle with both legs stretched backwards.
Following the circulation of the video, the Bau District Police Headquarters’ Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (BSPT IPD Bau) launched an operation to identify the three riders involved.
In a statement yesterday (Sept 2), police said one rider was successfully identified and detained, while the other two later turned themselves in at the BSPT office at IPD Bau.
All three were arrested and subsequently released on police bail to assist with investigations.
Two of the riders were also found not to possess valid driving licences, and summonses were issued against them.
The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
Bau police reminded the public that roads are not racetracks and warned against performing dangerous stunts for social media attention.
“What may look ‘cool’ for a few seconds on social media could end in the loss of a life in the blink of an eye,” police said.
The public was urged to consider the risks before attempting such stunts and to prioritise their safety and that of other road users.
“Going viral may last only a moment. The consequences may last a lifetime,” police added. — DayakDaily
